Missing dog search in Barnstaple
A drone search out of Barnstaple, North Devon's main town, where the Tarka Trail and steep wooded slopes towards Exmoor mean the countryside starts almost as soon as the streets end.
The Tarka Trail as an obvious route
The Tarka Trail follows the Taw out of Barnstaple on flat, easy, largely open ground, and a route like that is one of the first things checked when a dog goes missing near the river, because level, unobstructed ground is exactly what a frightened animal covers furthest along with the least effort. Rock Park, the riverside park closer to the town centre, gives a calmer, more contained stretch worth checking early too if the dog is more likely to still be close to home.
Wooded slopes towards Exmoor
North of the town, steep wooded slopes rise towards Exmoor, and that is particularly different ground from the flat trail and park land closer in, broken cover where a search has to work more slowly and where dense summer canopy can limit what the camera picks up, the same plain limitation that applies anywhere this site covers well-wooded ground.
A market town with open estates on its fringe
Away from the river, Barnstaple's Georgian and Victorian centre gives way to Victorian terraces, large post-war estates and newer development at Roundswell and Anchorwood, and at the edge of those newer estates, open farmland and countryside starts almost immediately, so a dog missing from the edge of town is often already in really open ground rather than still among streets.
A market town centre and the estates spreading beyond it
The Georgian and Victorian centre around the Pannier Market and Butchers Row, and the Victorian terraces on the slopes at Newport and Sticklepath, are close, historic ground with small yards, checked on foot before the search opens out towards the river covered above. The large post-war estates and the modern development at Roundswell and Anchorwood are a different, more spread-out layout, with proper gardens that back directly onto properly open farmland at the true working edge of the town, rather than onto another street the way the older terraces do.
A dog loose from one of the newer estates is often already close to open, searchable countryside, while one loose from the older terraces needs the close streets worked properly first. Bideford, Ilfracombe, Great Torrington and South Molton are the nearest towns to widen towards from Barnstaple.
The Pannier Market and Butchers Row, and the Long Bridge over the Taw, are useful landmarks close to the town centre for anyone meeting the search there, and Rock Park, right on the riverside, is checked early alongside the Tarka Trail covered above, since it is exactly the kind of open, contained green space a dog is drawn to before it commits to the wider countryside.

Operator ID and Flyer ID held, plus the A2 Certificate of Competency, which is what allows closer, faster operation near buildings, hedges and people than the basic category allows.

A DJI Mavic 4 Pro with a Hasselblad camera and 6K video, for wide daylight coverage of open ground at a resolution that holds up when a distant shape needs checking properly.
