Missing dog search in Ottery St Mary

A drone search out of Ottery St Mary, where gently rolling Otter valley farmland holds mist and damp long into the morning, ideal thermal ground once the light is right.

Hedged farmland on rolling ground

Ottery St Mary sits in the Otter valley on gently rolling farmland between the Blackdown Hills and the coast, which means a dog missing from the town has a lot of hedged fields, gateways and farm tracks to disappear into rather than one obvious direction. A search pattern here works outward from the last known location field by field, using the hedge lines the same way the dog probably did.

This is notably good ground for a drone. Open, rolling farmland with clear field boundaries is exactly the terrain where the aircraft covers distance fastest and a thermal image reads most clearly, without the broken cover of a wood or the noise of a built-up street to complicate it.

The valley holds the damp, and that helps

The Otter valley floor holds mist and damp for longer than the surrounding higher ground, and while that is generally a nuisance, it works in a search's favour once the light is right, because a valley floor that has been sitting damp and cool through the night gives strong thermal contrast against a warm animal in the early morning. Timing a flight for first light rather than the middle of the day makes a real difference here.

The Tumbling Weir and the river through the town give a dog an obvious route to follow if it heads away from the centre, and that line gets checked early alongside the open farmland either side of it.

Cob, thatch and the lanes behind them

The lanes around the historic centre still carry cob and thatch cottages with gardens and outbuildings that back onto open ground, and a dog bolting from one of these can be into a field before it has crossed a single road. Where the search needs to cross working farmland, landowner permission is sought straight away, and in a town built around agriculture that is usually a short conversation rather than a long one.

Cob and thatch lanes with fields at the end of the garden

Ottery St Mary's older lanes, with their cob and thatch survivals around the Georgian and Victorian centre, are often only one garden deep before open farmland starts, so a dog missing from one of these cottages can be through a hedge and into a field within a minute, well before it has crossed anything resembling a street. That immediate transition from garden to farmland is exactly why the search here treats the two as one continuous piece of ground rather than searching the town first and the fields second.

The newer estates spreading north and west of the historic centre are a more conventional, enclosed layout, and a dog loose from one of those is more likely to still be somewhere in the streets when the search starts. Beyond the town, the obvious places to widen towards are Honiton, Sidmouth, Cullompton or Exeter, each a short flight away and each covered separately on this site.

Behind the search

What a Ottery St Mary search is actually buying

CAA registered

Operator ID and Flyer ID held, plus the A2 Certificate of Competency, which is what allows closer, faster operation near buildings, hedges and people than the basic category allows.

Radiometric thermal

A DJI Mavic 2 Enterprise Advanced carrying a 640 by 512 thermal camera. This is the aircraft that goes up first at dawn, dusk and after dark, when a warm body shows against cooling ground.

100 megapixel daylight camera

A DJI Mavic 4 Pro with a Hasselblad camera and 6K video, for wide daylight coverage of open ground at a resolution that holds up when a distant shape needs checking properly.

Insured with Coverdrone

Full commercial cover for the operation. The certificate is available on request, without anyone having to chase for it.
