Missing dog search in Tiverton

A drone search out of Tiverton, where steep streets fall to the meeting of the Exe and Lowman, and the Grand Western Canal towpath gives a dog an obvious, easy route out of town.

Steep streets falling to two rivers

Tiverton is built where the Lowman joins the Exe, on steep-sided ground with the town centre low and the residential streets climbing sharply away from it. That shape means a dog running downhill from almost anywhere in the town ends up at the water fairly quickly, so the riverside, the confluence itself and the banks either side get checked early and thoroughly, on the reasonable assumption that gravity has done some of the work for the search already.

The canal towpath as an easy route

The Grand Western Canal runs out of the town on a flat, easy towpath, and that kind of level, open route is exactly the sort of ground a frightened dog covers a long way along without much effort, because it is easier going than crossing hedged fields or climbing the steep streets either side of it. The towpath and the open ground either side of it are checked as one of the first lines out of town, working outward from wherever the dog was last on it.

Knightshayes Court and its grounds sit close to the canal, and wooded parkland like this gives a dog somewhere to sit still under cover if it is more frightened than it is moving, which changes what the search is looking for as it works that stretch.

A notably wet valley

This stretch of the Exe valley is notably wetter than the Devon average, and steep sites around the town mean the ground cools and holds damp readily, which generally works in the search's favour for thermal contrast once the flying conditions themselves allow it.

Mill terraces, modern estates and the ground between them

Tiverton's Victorian mill workers' terraces, close to the Exe and the Lowman, are tightly packed with small yards and shared passageways, and a dog loose from one of these can move between several streets without crossing open ground at all. The extensive post-war estates and the large modern development on the eastern edge of the town are a different, more spread-out layout, with bigger gardens and more direct access to the fields beyond them.

Which of these two kinds of ground the dog started from changes the shape of the first search pass, before it opens out towards the canal, the river confluence or the wider Exe valley farmland covered above. Cullompton, Crediton, Exeter and Wellington are the nearest towns worth widening towards from here.

Tiverton Castle and Knightshayes Court both sit close to the canal and the river, useful reference points on the phone when describing exactly where the search is starting from, and Blundell's School, on the edge of town, marks roughly where the built-up streets give way to more open ground on that side.

Behind the search

What a Tiverton search is actually buying

CAA registered

Operator ID and Flyer ID held, plus the A2 Certificate of Competency, which is what allows closer, faster operation near buildings, hedges and people than the basic category allows.

Radiometric thermal

A DJI Mavic 2 Enterprise Advanced carrying a 640 by 512 thermal camera. This is the aircraft that goes up first at dawn, dusk and after dark, when a warm body shows against cooling ground.

100 megapixel daylight camera

A DJI Mavic 4 Pro with a Hasselblad camera and 6K video, for wide daylight coverage of open ground at a resolution that holds up when a distant shape needs checking properly.

Insured with Coverdrone

Full commercial cover for the operation. The certificate is available on request, without anyone having to chase for it.
