Missing dog search in Sidmouth

A drone search out of Sidmouth, hemmed in by Peak Hill and Salcombe Hill, both open access land, with a valley that funnels wind hard enough to decide whether a flight goes ahead.

Two open hills either side of a narrow town

Sidmouth sits in a steep-sided valley with Peak Hill to the west and Salcombe Hill to the east, both rising well over 150 metres and both open access land, popular for walking, and exactly the kind of ground a dog heads for once it is away from the streets below. A search often checks both hills early, because the town itself offers a dog very little open ground to run into directly, everything of any size is up one slope or the other.

A valley that funnels the wind

The narrow valley funnels wind straight off the sea and up through the town, and the steep hills either side create especially turbulent, gusting conditions rather than the steady breeze the coast a mile either way might be getting. That gets checked specifically here, because Sidmouth can be unflyable when Budleigh Salterton or Seaton, a short distance along the coast, are perfectly calm.

Jurassic Coast cliffs

The cliffs either side of Sidmouth are part of the Jurassic Coast and are noticeably dangerous ground, unstable in places, and any search that reaches the clifftop is treated as urgent for the dog's safety and flown with particular care rather than as a routine sweep of open grass.

Connaught Gardens and the esplanade give a calmer, more contained stretch close to the town centre, worth checking early if the dog is more likely to still be close to where it was lost than to have made it up onto the open hills.

A complex old town, and the villas on the valley sides above it

Sidmouth's unusually complete Regency and early Victorian core has a properly intricate street pattern, with narrow lanes, hidden courtyards and covered passages threaded between the grander frontages, and a dog loose in this part of town has a lot of close, complicated ground to disappear into before it reaches anything open. That tangle is worked on foot rather than from the air, because the aircraft adds little over a person who can actually walk into a courtyard and look.

The later villas up the valley sides at Sidford and Sidbury sit on more conventional garden plots, and a dog loose from one of those is more likely to be moving through open streets and gardens that the aircraft can actually help with. Once the old core and the valley-side streets have been checked, Budleigh Salterton, Ottery St Mary, Honiton and Seaton are the nearest towns to widen towards.

Sidmouth Esplanade and Connaught Gardens are useful, easy-to-find meeting points close to the old town if several people are converging on the search, and both sit at the point where the historic core gives way to the open hills and cliffs covered above, which is usually the more productive ground to check once the immediate streets have been ruled out.

Behind the search

What a Sidmouth search is actually buying

CAA registered

Operator ID and Flyer ID held, plus the A2 Certificate of Competency, which is what allows closer, faster operation near buildings, hedges and people than the basic category allows.

Radiometric thermal

A DJI Mavic 2 Enterprise Advanced carrying a 640 by 512 thermal camera. This is the aircraft that goes up first at dawn, dusk and after dark, when a warm body shows against cooling ground.

100 megapixel daylight camera

A DJI Mavic 4 Pro with a Hasselblad camera and 6K video, for wide daylight coverage of open ground at a resolution that holds up when a distant shape needs checking properly.

Insured with Coverdrone

Full commercial cover for the operation. The certificate is available on request, without anyone having to chase for it.
