Missing dog search in Teignmouth

The Ness, a red sandstone headland across the water from Teignmouth, and the wider Teign estuary give this town two distinct search zones on either side of the water. A dog on the Teignmouth side is a straightforward ground search worked from the seafront and the streets behind it; one that has somehow ended up across the water near the Ness or the ferry crossing needs the search coordinated on both banks rather than assumed to still be on the side it started.

Most of this network's coverage area is built to cope with south-westerly weather, because that is the prevailing wind across Devon. Teignmouth is unusual in taking direct easterly gales driving up the Channel, and that catches out anyone assuming the wind will behave the way it does everywhere else nearby. A flight here gets checked against the actual wind direction on the day, not a general assumption carried over from a more typical Devon town.

The sea wall regularly takes spray over the top in these conditions, and the exposed seafront itself is treated with the same caution as any other storm-exposed ground when deciding whether and where to fly.

Behind the Georgian seafront, the ground climbs steeply to Victorian villas and then post-war housing at Broadmeadow, and a dog moving away from the water tends to go up rather than along, which changes where the search concentrates once the immediate seafront has been checked.

The Georgian and Regency terraces along Teignmouth's front, and the seafront apartment conversions among them, are mostly flats without a private garden, so a dog reported missing from one of these addresses is more likely to have slipped a lead on a walk along the front than to have wandered off from home. The Victorian villas on the slopes behind have proper gardens and are checked garden to garden in the more usual way.

The post-war housing on the higher ground at Broadmeadow and towards the Bishopsteignton road is a more conventional estate layout again, generally calmer than the front and further from the water. Whichever of these describes the last sighting changes where the search actually starts, before it considers the Ness, the estuary crossing or the exposed seafront covered above. Dawlish, Newton Abbot, Torquay and Exeter are the nearest towns to widen towards.

Shaldon bridge, across the river, is worth mentioning specifically if there is any chance the dog crossed the water, since it is the obvious route between the two banks alongside the ferry, and checking it early can save a great deal of time coordinating a search that would otherwise assume the dog stayed on one side.
