Missing dog search in Torquay

Torquay is built across seven limestone hills around its harbour, so almost every street has a real gradient, and a dog moving away from wherever it was last seen tends to follow that gradient, generally downhill towards the harbour and the seafront rather than fighting the slope inland. That tendency shapes the first pass of a search here more than in most towns on this list, checking the downhill routes and the water's edge before working back up the slope.

The bay gives real shelter from the prevailing south-westerly, which is why the town grew here as a resort in the first place, but easterly weather comes straight in off open water, and that difference is checked specifically, because a day that feels calm in the shelter of the harbour can be considerably rougher out along the exposed clifftop at Babbacombe.

Torquay's grand Victorian and Edwardian villas and hotels, built in Italianate style with elaborate roofscapes, often sit in generous, walled grounds, and a proper check of those grounds is worth doing before assuming a dog has left the property at all, in much the same way as the larger houses in Budleigh Salterton. The large stock of converted flats is the opposite case: no private garden at all, so a dog missing from one of these addresses has almost always been lost on a walk rather than at home.
